Ice or Heat For Tooth Ache Pain.
It is advisable to ask your dentist before you use a toothache home remedy, especially in case of repeated use. A hot compress may help with temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ) tooth pain, but will worsen the pain for someone who has a tooth abscess. Heat should not be used for toothache pain when there is swelling or any indication of infection. Ice is very effective for tooth decay, abscess or joint toothaches and whenever there is tissue inflammation. The application of cold can decrease the discomfort by reducing both the tooth pain and swelling. Placing an ice pack or heat pack against the outside of the cheek over the area that hurts can relieve some of the tooth pain. An ice pack or heat pack can be applied several times a day but for not more than 15 or 20 minutes each time.
Ice or Heat For Head Ache Pain
Try applying heat to your feet to help make your head feel better. Heat applications to the feet draws blood to your feet, which will ease pressure on the blood vessels in your head. For a tension headache, place a hot compress on your forehead or the back on your neck. The heat will help relax knotted-up muscles in this area. It might sound contradictory, but you can follow up the heat treatment (or substitute it) by applying a cold compress to your forehead. Cold constricts blood vessels, and when they shrink, they stop pressing on sensitive nerves. Since headache pain sometimes originates in nerves in back of your neck, try moving the compress to the muscles at the base of your skull.
Ice or Heat For Eye Ache Pain
Many eye problems require the medical knowledge that an ophthalmologist (Eye M.D.) has from years of clinical and surgical training. But there are eye problems that you can treat safely at home, as long as they are relatively simple. Here are a few problems that can respond to ice or heat home treatment.
Black eye
Unless there are signs of more serious symptoms of a black eye, such as blurred vision, blood in the eye, or inability to move the eye, a black eye can generally be treated at home. To reduce swelling and ease pain the first day, apply an ice pack to the eye for 15 to 20 minutes at a time, once every hour.
Pink eye (Conjunctivitis)
Most cases of pink eye are caused by a virus and so don’t respond to antibiotics. Viral conjunctivitis will disappear on its own. Have your ophthalmologist diagnose your particular case. You can minimize the discomfort of conjunctivitis by applying cool compresses to the eye. Do not share the ice wrap with anyone else before washing because conjunctivitis is highly contagious.
Eye Strain
Cold water can also be very effective in relieving mild eye strain. It can improve blood circulation, relax tired muscles around your eyes, and reduce eye swelling and puffiness. A warm compress is another way to reduce eye strain. It will relax the muscles around your eyes, reduce strain and soothe dry eyes. It is also effective for reducing the pain swelling of an eye sty. When needing head, eye, tooth ache pain relief, it is recommended you check with your doctor.
